Middle aged, outspoken, yet stable

This is yesterday mornings ride (2nd March)

The cabby was a middle aged man, who had a son who recently got married and a daughter who is pursuing post graduation education.

He had his own truck earlier. He used to have a helper (kinnar in local slang) who helps loading unloading the truck, and other work during the transport business. The work involves transporting some stuff from Mumbai to other towns in the country. Once the trip is over, he might be in any other town and for coming back, he can't afford to come empty. So he waits in that town for 2,3 days or at times for a week. This kept him away from the family. Also there is lot of hassle regarding the security of consignment he carried.

His son left studies after 10th grade and started working with him and also working on some random temporary jobs. He is still struggling, but got married

His daughter has completed her BSc, D.Ed, and now is pursuing MSc in Research, that too in a college at Kolhapur. My first impression about him was not good (using some unacceptable words for the bikers on the road) but after some time, I found myself admiring him for promoting his daughter to go for higher studies. That too staying in a hostel. Keeping the daughter away in a hostel does not go well even with many so-called 'educated' people I know. They are over-protective of the girl child. And here was an uneducated man, whose son disappointed him, but he is encouraging his daughter. Hats off!

Coming back to business, when he was fed up with the truck business, he told his son to start taking care of himself somehow, and he sold the truck, to graduate to a cab driver. Now he is happy he is able to work as per his will and go back to his family every evening. Targets 1000 Rs per day which he gets easily

He was not good at using the smartphone, but has learnt the cab's booking app
I helped him install Paytm wallet and transferred Rs.5 for testing. He hurried to return me a coin of 5 Rs. when I was getting down. I told him, you learn paytm and pay me back the same way.. He agreed and left with a smile!

(I won't mention the cab brand, for privacy reasons)

Purpose

Cabs in India were always meant to be black and yellow (Kaali-peeli as they are popularly known in Mumbai). but India saw a rise in better and branded cabs in recent times, pioneered by Meru cabs a few years ago. Then the online revolution started impacting with Tabcab, bookmytaxi, etc coming up.

The latest game changers are Ola and Uber, when cab booking became smart and quick with a smartphone. Also the costs came down with competition and due to cab-pooling options

This was also the time when I upgraded to a lifestyle, where I could afford to have my own car. However, as per my financial intelligence calculations, own car is a depreciating asset, and market has options where I can reach office with an Ola or Uber ride with convenience and comfort of own chauffeur driven car, at a lower cost.

So as my cab rides increased, I started thinking how these newer companies are attracting customers as well as cab owners with huge incentives, despite making losses for the company. This made me probe all drivers (cabbies) about how they go about doing their business and what is their life like.

So during my hour long ride, I get to see a portrait of a man, who spends most of his life behind the steering wheel. This blog is meant to record collage of all such portraits I witness.
